All three Middlesex schools meet ‘No Child Left Behind’ standards
The Middlesex County School system received good news this week as all three county schools—Middlesex High School, Middlesex Elementary School and St. Clare Walker Middle School—met the federal No Child Left Behind “Adequate Yearly Progress” (AYP) targets. Middlesex is one of only six school divisions out of 132 in Virginia to have all of its schools meet AYP benchmarks.

Region studies dredge funding options
imageThe emergency dredging of Jackson Creek began on August 4. The channel, last dredged in 1970, has silted in and narrowed to about 25 feet as marked by the red and green temporary buoys above. The new channel will be straightened slightly and will be 60 to 80 feet wide.

Conrad, Reed, Goforth file as candidates
With the deadline to file as a candidate in local elections just five days away, three more candidates recently filed papers to be on the November 8 Middlesex County ballot. The deadline to file as a candidate for the board of supervisors or the school board is Tuesday, August 23, at 7 p.m.

Delinquent water bills slow cash flow
Delinquent water bills have added to Urbanna’s $10,000 cash flow problem. On Monday, the town council voted to cash in a $10,372 CD that is about 20 years old. At one time it was getting a good interest rate, but now pays very little interest, said Mayor Don Richwine. This is the only CD the town has.
