Highway marker to recognize Indian village on Urbanna Creek
The Virginia Department of Transportation will soon install a road marker on Route 227 near Rosegill denoting that John Smith’s mystery Indian town of “Opiscopank” was once located on the banks of Urbanna Creek. Woodland Indians lived in the area from 500 BC to 1500 AD.

Attorneys for Urbanna Town Council filed a motion on January 31 asking the Middlesex Circuit Court to require Potomac Timber Investments LLC to respond to discovery requests submitted by the town council’s attorneys regarding a pending lawsuit.

In separate cases, a Lancaster County Circuit Court grand jury last week found probable cause and issued true bills in homicide charges against Brent Phillip Snyder and Korey Steil Witherspoon. Snyder, 19, of Windmill Point Road is charged with the September 15 homicide and child neglect of a 5-month-old infant left in his care by his live-in girlfriend.

The Middlesex County real estate reassessment has started and, according to the county’s appraising firm, preliminary stu-dies show that the assessed values of real estate in 2007 are about 94.9% of current value. “This means that if you own a $100,000 home now, you currently are being taxed on $94,900 of its real value,” said Steve Wampler of Wampler-Eanes appraising firm.
