Citizens voice concerns over debt and taxes
At the public hearing, Hal Muller of Urbanna said the county was carrying $31 million in debt, which is too much. He said this means there is $31,000 worth of debt for every resident in Middlesex County.
“Can we sustain this amount of debt?” Muller asked. “How are we going to get out of this debt crisis?”

Middlesex names Whitley interim administrator
Middlesex County Board of Supervisors has hired William H. Whitley as the county’s interim county administrator. Whitley was county administrator of Gloucester County from 1984-2008, of Mathews County from 1977-1983, and of Buckingham County from 1983 until he took over the Gloucester position.

Crabs making a comeback
The Chesapeake Bay crab population is on the rebound. According to a Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) winter dredge survey, there are 587 million juvenile crabs in the bay region compared to 207 million in 2011. There is a total population of 764 million crabs in 2012 compared to 461 million in 2011.

Marine industry’s impact on Middlesex is over $50 million per year
With 30 marinas tucked into the Middlesex County creeks and inlets off the Rappahannock and Piankatank Rivers, the marine industry’s economic impact on the county was $53.9 million in 2010. On average, an owner of a large recreational vessel annually spends about $14,000 in the local economy.
