Heat wave takes heavy toll on crops
Triple-digit heat and lack of appreciable rain has stunted crops in some areas of the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck and killed the corn in other areas. The record-setting heat “cooked” corn that was planted early in the season, said Jason Bray, a fifth generation farmer at Hampstead Farm near Urbanna.

‘History of Middlesex’ to be released this fall
The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted on July 3 to appropriate $69,438 to Carter Printing of Richmond to publish 2,000 copies of a 400-plus-page book, “Signatures in Time: A Living History of Middlesex County, Va.”

County buys land next to MHS
The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 on July 3 to appropriate $150,000 plus closing costs to purchase land in Saluda that adjoins the Middlesex High School football field.

Urbanna refinances loans
At a special meeting on July 5, the Urbanna Town Council approved a resolution to borrow $375,000 from BB&T to refinance existing town loans. The measure consolidates six loans at a rate of 4.09% for 7 years, said Urbanna treasurer Bob Calves. The monthly payment would drop from about $6,376 to $5,152.
