NAACP wants answers to questions regarding county ‘bail out’ in 2007
The Middlesex County NAACP continues to voice concern over the county board of supervisors’ decision in 2007 to “bail out” of Section 5 of the U.S. Voting Rights Act of 1965. Essex and Middlesex counties and the City of Fredericksburg opted to bail out of the program in 2007, and were given approval by the U.S. Justice Department.

Calves named town treasurer
imageThe Urbanna Town Council voted unanimously Monday to appoint Bob Calves as town treasurer for the salary of $1 a year. The salary is a formality. The town code requires the treasurer to receive and disburse money as directed by the town council.

‘A facade of respectability’
Among the items found in Filling’s office were $3,000 in donation checks dating to 2006, 2007 and 2008, which had not been deposited, testified Tinney. The squad could not purchase fuel with its credit card because Exxon had denied credit due to non-payment of bills. Filling’s excuse, said Tinney, “was that we didn’t have the money.” Mr. Filling frequently responded, ‘We don’t have the money for that.’ ”

Board hears concerns over, and the need for, MHS sports complex
The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing Tuesday, March 6, at 9 a.m. to receive comments regarding the proposed financing of $3.5 million to build the Syd Thrift Sports Complex at Middlesex High School and to purchase 41 acres adjoining the landfill.
