MHS graduates 111 students
The 111 members of Middlesex High School Class of 2009 took a big step toward their future during Saturday’s graduation ceremony in the John S. Clements Memorial Gymnasium. Featured speaker Delegate Harvey Morgan gave the class some time-tested advice.

On June 29, 1969, the capsule-shaped pool was dedicated and officially named the Ricky Taylor Memorial Community Swimming Pool. Ten-year-old Ricky Taylor was killed when he fell from a float after the parade.

Urbanna’s real estate tax rate will go up 2 cents to 22 cents per $100 of value in the 2009-10 fiscal year, which begins July 1. Council looked for ways to avoid the 10% hike. For two hours at Friday’s finance committee special meeting, council debated whether a tax increase is justified, especially in a sagging economy.

Roland Eugene Murphy of Fredericksburg caught a new state record spadefish that weighed 14.92 pounds on June 13. Murphy’s spadefish is also a pending world record. He registered the citation fish at The Tackle Shop at J&W Seafood in Deltaville.
