Urbanna mayor candidate charged with election fraud
Janet S. Smith was arrested on Tuesday, October 2, and charged with a felony for filing “false statements” on an election candidate form. The arrest warrant states that on June 12, 2012 Smith made “a false material statement” that “constitutes the crime of election fraud.”

Fred Crittenden: A long way from Hardyville
imageFred Crittenden of Hardyville was inducted into the Virginia Livestock Hall of Fame on September 22 in a ceremony at the Virginia Tech Alphin-Stuart Livestock Teaching Arena on the Blacksburg campus. Crittenden was the first exporter of live swine for breeding stock from Virginia.

Supervisors support ‘yes’ vote on Nov. 6
Middlesex Board of Supervisors vot unanimously to support a referendum on the November 6 ballot to amend the state constitution. The proposed amendment states that private property can only be taken through eminent domain for public benefit, such as for the construction of roads, utilities and for the elimination of a public nuisance.

Break-ins occur at Deltaville businesses
The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office is investigating break-ins that occurred at two related businesses in Deltaville this week, reported Captain M.E. Sampson of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office. Parts City and its sister business, Deltaville Auto Marine, which is located next door, were broken into sometime between 5 p.m. September 30, and 8 a.m. October 1.
