Firehouse addition groundbreaking is Sunday
The groundbreaking on the addition to the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department firehouse in Urbanna, which has been in the planning process since 2002, will be on Sunday, June 12, at 3 p.m. The public is invited to be on hand as this “major expansion” begins. Refreshments will be served.

Betty Allen Chowning instilled the love of music that has lasted a lifetime for many of her former Middlesex High School choir students. Some students came to her with voices that cracked and were off key. They left with the joy of singing.

The Middlesex County Public Library will celebrate its 25th anniversary from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 5, at St. Clare Walker Middle School on Route 33 at Locust Hill. The public is encouraged to attend. Several Middlesex County authors will be featured at the event to discuss their writing and their books.

The investigation into Middlesex Sheriff Guy Abbott’s financial records continues under the secrecy of a special grand jury. Information is sketchy and the file remains sealed. The investigation that was authorized by the Virginia Attorney General on November 3, 2009 has not resulted in Sheriff Abbott being charged.

Testing at the old county landfill has revealed that one test well has dichlorothane contamination at a level above state and federal groundwater standards. The contaminated well is very close to a vehicle repair shop at the landfill that was once used by the county to maintain trash trucks. County officials believe the contaminant came from that old shop.
