Fred & Bettie Lee Gaskins named 2010 Oyster Festival grand marshals
imageThe Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation has named Fred and Bettie Lee Gaskins of Urbanna as grand marshals of the 53rd annual Urbanna Oyster Festival set for Friday and Saturday, November 5-6. Fred and Bettie Lee moved to Urbanna in 1966 when, as newlyweds, they purchased the Southside Sentinel, Middlesex County’s weekly community newspaper.

Former Middlesex resident charged with murder
imageLancaster County Sheriff Ronnie Crockett said Brent Phillip Snyder, 18, of Windmill Point Road in White Stone and formerly of Middlesex County, was arrested September 15 on a charge of felony child abuse and neglect related to injuries to Landon Selph. The charge of murder was added when the baby died at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.

‘A better way to grow oysters’
imageSLIDESHOW: The Chesapeake Bay Foundation has planted “reef balls” laden with oyster larvae at the mouth of the Piankatank River. On September 10, the Bay Foundation’s boat, “Chesapeake Golden,” arrived at Gwynn’s Island with 50 reef balls, with thousands of spat attached to each concrete ball.

Concerns voiced over town easement
A concern over possible encroachment into the public right-of-way at the end of Virginia Street at Urbanna Creek has led to the conclusion that the town has “exclusive rights” to the 30-foot wide strip of land on which Payne’s Crab House has been located for several years.
