Land application of wastewater utilizes nutrients
For more than 18 years, Kilmer’s Point and Cedar Pointe subdivisions near Urbanna have used air, sunlight and land to treat their wastewater. It is sprayed on a 14-acre field where remaining nutrients become fertilizer for plants.

Dock expansion denied by VMRC
On Tuesday, Jan. 27, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) denied a request by Potomac Timber Investments LLC to expand the number of boat slips at the Urbanna Yachting Center Marina, located on Watling Street at Urbanna Creek. The commission’s action followed a public hearing.

Mayor clarifies statement on town code
Urbanna Mayor Beatrice Taylor responded with a written response on Monday to a statement she made during a Urbanna Town Council work session on Jan. 16. At the work session, Taylor was responding to a question by town resident Bob Calves and she said the town code is a “guideline.”

Bracke appeals convictions; other charges pending
Convicted child molester and arsonist Arthur R. Bracke has filed a notice of appeal in Middlesex Circuit Court through his attorney Charles E. Haden of Hampton. Bracke, who remains in jail, still faces four sexual felonies—two counts of aggravated sexual battery and two counts of sexually abusing a child—that allegedly occurred in August 2007.

Sewage comment deadline is Feb. 6
On January 21, more that 100 people attended a Virginia Department of Environmental Quality public hearing on the proposed sewage plant. February 6 is the deadline to comment on the Saluda wastewater treatment plant being proposed by the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors.
