Historical marker honoring Irene Morgan to be dedicated
Irene Morgan’s resistance to segregation in the Morgan vs. Virginia case led to the U.S. Supreme Court handing down a landmark decision banning segregation in interstate travel in 1946. Morgan refused to give up her seat on a Greyhound bus to a white passenger. After a struggle with the Middlesex County Sheriff, she was arrested and detained.

Grand marshal spread his legacy statewide
imageThe Urbanna Oyster Festival Foundation Board has named former Virginia Marine Resources (VMRC) Commissioner William (Bill) Pruitt as the grand marshal of the 55th annual Urbanna Oyster Festival. You might say he was good at his job, or you might say he was just being Bill Pruitt.

County decides against separate bids on recyclables
The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 last week not to “separately” bid out the county’s co-mingled recycling program. Co-mingled recycling materials include plastics, aluminum cans and glass. Mansfield has continued to voice concerns that the county is not getting enough “bang for its buck” with VPPSA.

Saluda man to be sentenced in abduction case
On Wednesday, September 5, David Oscar Thomas of Saluda was convicted in the Middlesex County Circuit Court of several charges arising from incidents which occurred in Saluda on July 29, 2011, reported Middlesex Commonwealth Attorney Michael Hurd.
