On Thursday, August 25, Middlesex County Sheriff Guy L. Abbott was arrested on 25 felony indictments handed down from a Middlesex County special grand jury, reported Brian J. Gottstein, director of communications for the office of the Attorney General of Virginia, in an August 26 email to the Southside Sentinel.

It wasn’t surprising to many that Keith Hodges won Tuesday’s primary for the Republican nomination for the 98th District seat in the Virginia House of Delegates. What was surprising was his margin of victory. With four candidates on the ballot, Hodges received almost 41% of the vote and carried 27 of the 38 precincts in the district.

A Friday evening house fire on Providence Road in Deltaville displaced a family that has received disaster assistance from the River Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross. Ten family members were provided with motel accommodations, said Judy Brown, chapter disaster coordinator.

Citizens packed the historic courthouse in Saluda on August 16 to voice their opinions on a proposed $3.2 million Syd Thrift Athletic Complex at Middlesex High School. Board chairman Jack Miller informed the standing-room-only audience that no action would be taken by the supervisors that night.
