Many residents of Middlesex County have never known a time that Fred S. Crittenden of Hardyville wasn’t on either the county school board or county board of supervisors. Forty-one years is a long time—9 years on the school board (1971-79) and 32 on the board of supervisors (1980-2011).

Deborah Haynes of Urbanna, an advertising sales representative at the Southside Sentinel since 1999 and the advertising manager since 2008, has announced her retirement at the end of this month. She will be succeeded by Maeghaen Eley of Urbanna, who has worked in the department since 2008.

It’s almost time for Christmas Friends Inc. to deliver hundreds of gifts to those in need in Middlesex County. Drivers and delivery vans (with back seats removed) will be needed on Saturday, December 17, from 8 a.m. to noon. Chrysler and Dodge vans with stow-and-go seats are ideal, but most vans have seats that are easily removed.

When too much is not enough, Stephen Blue just adds more lights to his popular “Deltaville Lights” Christmas display at Mason Realty in Deltaville. What started in 2002 with 15,000 lights has blossomed into a mega-extravaganza with 77,000 lights. (That’s not a misprint.) Blue’s display uses about 180 amps of electricity–nearly as many amps as a large house.
