School proposal may be cut 5%
It could be back to the budget drawing board for school superintendent Rusty Fairheart and the Middlesex County School Board. On March 24, county administrator Charles Culley informed county supervisors that Middlesex faces an $800,000 shortfall in the current 2008-09 (FY09) county budget.

Urbanna staff proposes 4-cent real estate tax hike
The figures are preliminary, but the Town of Urbanna staff has recommended a 4-cent increase in the town real estate tax rate as well as a $1 increase in water rates for the upcoming 2009-10 (FY10)budget. The preliminary figures were released at the town council’s finance committee work session on March 27.

County gets good FY08 audit report
Even though there are budgetary concerns in Middlesex County, the most recent audit that ended June 30, 2008 (FY08) does not reflect any major financial health problems for the county. Auditors have indicated to Middlesex supervisors that the county is financially sound.

VDOT to address funding reductions Tuesday
During the meeting there will be a brief presentation regarding the proposed changes that will impact drivers in each area, including planned reductions to: rest areas, safety service patrols, mowing/roadside maintenance, ferry services, and VDOT residency offices.

Planners, supervisors approve special exceptions
A declining economy is directly related to two special exceptions that were recently recommended for approval by the Middlesex Planning Commission, and granted by the Middlesex Board of Supervisors on March 16.
