County schools face hard economic times
At a school board meeting Monday night, school superintendent Rusty Fairheart gave a bleak description of the economic outlook facing the Middlesex County Public School System. Fairheart told the board that county schools may face a $585,000 loss in state funds in the 2011-12 (FY12) school year.

One person was flown by helicopter to a hospital following a single-vehicle crash at 2:37 a.m. on Sunday, January 9, in Topping, said Sergeant G.T. Mathias of the Virginia State Police. Three persons were transported to area hospitals following a crash at Stormont Road and Grafton Church Road near Hartfield on Wednesday, January 5.

Virginia State Police special agent accountant Jennifer S. Brown filed three search warrants in Middlesex County Circuit Court on Thursday, January 6, regarding alleged embezzlement and grand larceny involving George Lewis Filling of Urbanna, who was treasurer of the Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad in Urbanna from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2010.
