One Woman's Opinion

Order Mary Buxton’s books
imageLife and love in the rural tidewater area of Virginia is a common thread that runs through nearly all of Mary Wakefield Buxton's books. The push and pull of old and new, North and South, man and woman, life and death, are discovered, illuminated and reflected upon in each of them. Such is the heart and soul of a writer.

In Pursuit of Fairness
imageThe Southside Sentinel wants to be fair to all. Since my column was political in nature (“Viva La Dreams!” and written in support of Senator McCain for President), it would not have been deemed fair to Democrats and their candidate, Barack Obama (who won the election), because there would not have been time for them to respond to my opinion.

Urbanna Oyster Festival
Urbanna, Va.— Every year I know it is time for the Urbanna Oyster Festival by three indicators: the maple tree in Taber Park turns bright red orange, there is a constant drone of machinery as the town cleans up (leaf blowers, lawn mowers, and trucks hauling in “boothery”), and Lewis Filling, town manager, starts calling me “Ma’am.”

Fall Festivals in Full Swing
imageIt was fun to pack the car with visiting daughter Liz and two grandchildren, and head for Holly Point Art and Seafood Festival in Deltaville last month. All signs were go. Everyone was happy (not necessarily a given) as we squeezed into the sporty Jaguar.

Issues On My Mind
Those who win in this coming election, whether as president or congressman, will surely have their hands full. Great challenges lie ahead. May future leaders be aptly inspired.
