The range in the participants’ yoga experience was wide, from people brand new to yoga to yoga instructors and other seasoned practitioners.

Over 75 people ages 27-77 attended the 5th Annual Kekoka Yoga Retreat (KYR) this past weekend at YMCA Camp Kekoka outside of Kilmarnock, reported retreat chair Susan Johnson. The theme was “Bliss.”

The sold-out weekend began Friday evening with “A Mixed Bag of Bliss,” a multi-level class taught by four instructors from the waterfront stage, and ended Sunday morning with another all-levels class taught poolside by Johnson.

The retreat raised approximately $9,000 for camp scholarships.

“In addition to raising money for campers, our intention was to provide an opportunity that connected people with whatever makes them come alive,” said Johnson.

The range in the participants’ yoga experience was wide, from people brand new to yoga to yoga instructors and other seasoned practitioners, said Johnson. Classes and activities included all-levels yoga classes, meditation, Qi Gong, a Thai Yoga Massage master class, laughing yoga, pranayama, anatomy, an holistic healing panel discussion, small group discussions, arts and crafts, Kirtan, a class for teachers on hands-on adjustments, a healing circle, massages, energy work, clairvoyant readings and acupuncture.

Session leaders included Johnson, Suzanne Best, Sue Chewning, Renata Gregori, Danielle Grinnen, Judy Knight, Kirsten Knull, Jenny Landry, Amy Lewis, Anna Pomaska, Wyatt Portz, David Scarbrough, Caroline Shifflett, Audrey Stewart, India Stuart, Dr. Michael Sullivan, Shelle Taylor, Katie West, Troy Wyne and Khajit Wyszynski. All of them volunteered their time to help send kids to camp.

Next year’s retreat will take place May 15-17. For more information about Camp Kekoka or the Kekoka Yoga Retreat, please contact YMCA Camp Kekoka Branch Director Cassie Leichty at or 435-3616.
