Urbanna Boat Parade winners named

The outrageous mermaids of Capt. Tom Bishop.

From star-spangled to outrageous, the Urbanna Boat Parade on Sunday featured 12 decorated vessels to the delight of hundreds of onlookers who gathered at the Urbanna Town Marina at Upton’s Point.

Again, “Bethpager,” captained by Jimmy Jackson, was the judges choice for “most patriotic.” The deadrise boat featured a singing crew and a helium balloon release for its finale.

Captain Phil Friday and crew again took the “most creative” award. “Jammin’ Jellies” featured large white helium balloons with flowing streamers that made them resemble jellyfish.

Honorable mention was awarded to “Little Chief” captained by Alvin Daniel.

Tom Bishop captained the “most outrageous” school of “mermaids” to be seen.

Captain Buddy Wyker aboard “Blue Chip” got the entries lined up for the 6:30 p.m. start and led the parade.

“We appreciated all the boats participating,” said Dianne Franck, town marina manager. “This is what makes the Urbanna 4th of July special.”

The melodious voice of Middlesex County Administrator Charlie Culley announced each boat.
