Tickets on sale for Humane Society auction
“When the dogs go barking in . . . and the cat is in that number!”
The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society (GMHS) and its event sponsor, Chesapeake Bank, invite the public to hear the sounds of great Dixie Land Jazz wailing away in the background while supporting the shelter animals at the 2013 GMHS annual Auction and Mardi Gras Celebration on Saturday, February 9, at 6 p.m. at the Abingdon Ruritan Center in Bena.
“What businesses such as Chesapeake Bank, Naked Mountain Winery, Phillips Energy, Rappahannock Concrete, Sentara, Colonial Virginia Bank, Ken Houtz Chevrolet-Buick, Brent & Becky’s Bulbs, Corbin Appraisal Service Inc., Betsy Henderson Antiques, Black Dog Gallery as well as individual sponsors are doing for the Gloucester-Mathews-Middlesex Animal Shelter is greatly improving the quality of life of the homeless animals in its care,” said Sara Delo, co-chair of the Auction Committee. “Because of their support and the support of so many members of our community, these animals will have shelter, food and medical care as they await adoptive homes. Then comes the good part—the tables turn and we see what a positive impact these animals have on the lives of their adoptive families.”
There are several ways one can help from buying a ticket ($45), reserving a table for eight ($450), donating items for the auction, to buying an ad in the program or taking on a sponsorship role.
Auction items collected so far include an amazing canoe handcrafted by Dr. Richard Crowder, a week’s stay on beautiful Fripp Island, artwork, antiques, items for the home and garden, golf and sailing outings—something for everyone!
The GMHS is adding another element of fun this year. In keeping with the Mardi Gras theme, they are looking for royalty, the four-legged kind! Event sponsors at $750 and above will automatically get seats on the Royal Court for either a Duke or Duchess dog, cat, or other animal; all breeds or combinations thereof are eligible.
Additional seats on the Court are available for $250 per animal, but they are limited. You can sponsor your own animal, an employee’s animal, or even a shelter animal. Photos and bios of the Royal Court will be royally displayed, and the King and Queen will be selected by voting (in the form of a $1 donation per vote) at the GMHS auction. One may begin collecting votes/donations now and stuff the ballot box at the auction. This is one election where a fist full of dollars really counts. The King and Queen will be lavished with all the press coverage and special privileges befitting royalty.
