Tickets available for ‘A Christmas Carol’ at Gloucester Arts on Main
|John Hardy in the Charles Dickens classic, ‘A Christmas Carol’|
On Sunday, December 15, at 3 p.m. there will be a unique presentation of Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol” where all the characters will be acted by John Hardy—a single actor who plays 16 roles.
The set is simple: two chairs, a table, and two benches. Lighting and sound are equally simple. The play can be performed in two acts, approximately 50 minutes each, with one 15-minute intermission.
Hardy is an associate artist with The Barter Theatre. He has been working around the country as a playwright, actor, director for over 30 years. Over the course of his career Hardy has directed over 100 professional productions including several Shakespearean plays. As an actor John has played many of the great roles including Hamlet and MacBeth. He recently received the Sara Spencer Award, for lifetime achievement, from the Southeastern Theatre Conference.
A review by Warren M. Harris of Hardy’s performance of “A Christmas Carol” states, “. . . All of the actors play multiple roles, most of which are done well but remain somewhat forgettable. John Hardy, on the other hand, makes each role, no matter how small, memorable and distinct. He enthusiastically and precisely physicalizes not only the cringing Bob Cratchit but also the sneering, pipe-smoking cockney fence, Old Joe, as well as several other characters in between; each of them a delight of virtuoso acting.”
This special version of the Charles Dickens classic will be a holiday attraction for children of all ages and is part of Gloucester Arts on Main’s Performing Arts Series in collaboration with the Virginia Commission of the Arts. Advanced tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students, and $7 for children under 12. All are invited to attend.
