Signup continues for April 8 RE Strong Run
The 4th annual RE Strong Run takes place again this year on Saturday, April 8, at Historic Hewick Plantation in the beautiful waterfront community of Urbanna. Event organizers invite the community to join in the festivities at the post-race celebration and to participate in the Fun Run, 5K and 10K races.
The event had its start three years ago on a blustery and frigid January day. Over 300 friends and family members of Urbanna resident Ruth Ellen Hurley gathered to walk and run in her honor and raise funds for cancer research. Ruth Ellen had been battling breast cancer for several years and was in the final days of her brave fight.
Since Ruth Ellen’s passing, her friends and family have continued to gather and organize the annual RE Strong Run & Celebration. Last year more than 700 runners participated and even more are expected to sign up this year. The event has raised over $150,000 to date for cancer research, and this year’s festival will again benefit the life-saving and cutting-edge research taking place at VCU Massey Cancer Center in Richmond. Ruth Ellen received much of her treatment at the cancer center and its research is utilized in cancer fighting treatments across the state of Virginia and the nation.
Cancer survivors at the event will receive pink hats to wear during the race and other participants can purchase signs in memory or honor of those affected by cancer.
Everyone is invited to join in the fun run, 5K and 10K race events the morning of April 8. Runners, walkers, children or those who just want to cheer on the participants are welcome to take part in the fun.
Race participants begin at Historic Hewick Plantation, then head into the charming town of Urbanna.
Following the races, the party really gets started. Runners and walkers will enjoy a variety of post-race food and be awarded participant medals. After the race guests will enjoy live music, local cuisine, an awards ceremony, and fine beverages inside the event tent. A variety of vendors will offer up food, merchandise and more.
Families participating with young runners can take part in the Kids Run featuring a short course around Hewick Plantation’s property. The event will offer childcare during the 5K and 10K races for participants.
