Sherman Holmes to open Groovin’ in the Park season

by Bill Powell
Events Director
Deltaville Maritime Museum

Groovin’ in the Park, the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park’s casual outdoor music series opens on Easter Saturday, April 20. The maritime park is happy to announce that Middlesex’s own Sherman Holmes has agreed to take our stage and headline a gospel and blues show with a gospel trio choir and band. I’ve heard this group and you are in for a treat! Sherman has toured over 57 countries and been honored with a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship, the highest honor the government bestows upon traditional artists.

For those of you not familiar with Sherman and the Holmes Brothers music, I encourage you to read Larry Chowning’s definitive article, “The Holmes Brothers were music pioneers.” The article ran in the February 28 Southside Sentinel.

Groovin’ will be held in Waterfront Park on Mill Creek. Groovin’ is a “bring your own lawn chair and picnic” event. Food and beverages will be available. The gates will always be open 1 hour before the concerts for picnicking or just enjoying the park. Watch our website and this paper for updates.
