On Friday, January 4, at 6 p.m., there will be a reception for Biff Marshall, Gloucester Arts on Main’s Artist of the Month for January as well as the artwork of the talented students from Ware Academy.

Marshall, a self-taught caricature and graffiti artist, was an only child whose his mother spent a lot of time with him coloring and drawing pictures. When he was 6 years old, he entered a coloring contest for the newspaper and won tickets to the Ringling Brothers Circus and had his picture in the paper which he found very exciting as a small child.

One of his favorite cartoon characters was Garfield, which inspired him to develop his own cartoon style while he was in middle school and high school. During his summers he often went to Busch Gardens and became fascinated by the artists who were doing portraits of people and how they transformed a blank piece of paper to life before his eyes.

At the age of 19, he began creating caricatures at Busch Gardens. Today he still does caricatures as well as murals and children’s rooms. He also has done some of his designs as paintings and since he is partially colorblind, his colors are very strong and contrasted.

Ware Academy also will be displaying the work of its talented young artists who are inspired by their veteran art teacher, Linda Brent. Their show promises to include a wide variety of creative two-dimensional and three-dimensional art exploring innovative artist expression using a variety of materials. This exposition from Ware Academy will be on display during the month of January.

The evening will be rounded out by the music of Scott Varney who plays a multidimensional electric base.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Gloucester Arts on Main also encourages the public to visit its gallery during its normal business hours, noon to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Gloucester Arts on Main is dedicated to enriching the cultural and economic life of the community through the presentation of art, the performing arts, and other events.
