Rebuilding the dam at Hilliard’s
In 2002, the dam on Hilliard’s Millpond at Remlik broke, leaving the 20-plus homes along its shore with a great mud hole. Ever since, it has been an uphill battle for landowners along the pond to get the dam fixed, but now a new dam is about complete.
In 2006, the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors allocated $40,000 in road funds to go toward the replacement of the dam. A firm was hired, the dam was fixed, and then it broke again. When landowners went back to the state and county, there were no funds to help fix it again, so the homeowners association on the pond funded the project themselves. (Photo by Larry Chowning)
