RAL features local artists Ellis and Wicox

Every month Rappahan-nock Art League (RAL) Studio Gallery window designer Mary Ellis and her assistant Anne Wilcox celebrate the seasons with displays of art produced by RAL artists. This month the two women themselves are the featured artists.

The goal of Wilcox, a Deltaville artist with a background in art and teaching, and Ellis, an artist/photographer who lives in Wicomico Church, is to create eye-catching displays that will make those who pass by eager to step inside the Gallery on Main Street in Kilmarnock to see more.

Offbeat accents are used as backgrounds for the art. Working on a limited budget, the window wizards buy, beg or borrow unique pieces appropriate to the themes from their own homes, consignment shops or the homes of friends.

Two different RAL artists are displayed in the windows each month. “It just happened that we both had work that would suit for July,” said Wilcox of her paintings of a deserted beach and a canoe resting quietly in the river, and of Ellis’ abstract paintings, bright as a sky full of July 4th fireworks.
