Rabid fox killed near Church View
A rabid fox that attacked a dog near Church View was shot and killed by the dog’s owner on July 7, said Middlesex Animal Control Officer Ricky Warren. The incident occurred on Gayle’s Road off Burch’s Mill Road.
When the owner and his brother went outside to see what the dog was barking at about 9 p.m., the rabid fox attempted to attack the brother. However, there was no human contact with the fox.
This was the second case of rabies in Middlesex this year. The dog had a current rabies vaccination so he only had to have a booster shot. He also will be quarantined for 45 days, said Warren.
If the dog had not been vaccinated for rabies, a strict quarantine period with no human contact would be in force for six months to see if rabies symptoms develop. Rabies is always fatal once symptoms are present.
This year there has been only one other confirmed rabies case in Middlesex, which involved a rabid raccoon that came in contact with a dog in the Deltaville area.
