Maritime Museum begins Oar House expansion

Deltaville Maritime Museum treasurer Bob LeBoeuf wisely keeps “eyes up” as museum board member Chuck McGhinnis prepares to air nail the first sections of attic subfloor on the first phase of the new Oar House addition. Work began this week on a 1,726-square-foot addition to the Oar House at the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park. The Oar House is currently the maintenance shed, equipment storage and repair shop for the museum’s grounds and buildings. The expansion, which will include a section for boat restoration and boat building, more than doubles the current 1,152-square-foot space.

Spearheaded by museum board member Chuck McGhinnis, the construction work is being done by dedicated museum volunteers and staff. Many thanks to Bob and Christi LeBoeuf for their generous donation of all the materials that make this expansion possible.

The 48’ x 24’ open-sided section that will “L” out from the north side of the building is being designed as a “Living History” section. Visitors to the museum and park can watch as either restoration of historic workboats or new watercraft up to 45’ can be built.

Those wishing to donate or volunteer for the Oar House expansion, archive room, or restoration project should contact the museum.

To find out everything you need to know about the museum and park, purchase event tickets, donate, volunteer, or become a member visit, email or call 776-7200. The museum mailing address is P.O. Box 466, Deltaville, VA 23043.
