‘Oyster Tasting’ to benefit Jacob’s Ladder program


The September issue of Southern Living magazine, on page MVA1, reports that Rappahannock River Oysters LLC is debuting a “fresh-from-the-sea tasting counter” at the Union Market in Washington, D.C.

However, closer to home on Sunday, September 30, Rappahannock River Oysters will host an “Oyster Tasting” to benefit Jacob’s Ladder from 3 to 5 p.m. at Locklies Marina in Topping (rain or shine).

Guests will have the opportunity to taste Rappahannocks, Olde Salts, and Stingrays — three native oysters re-introduced into the Chesapeake Bay by Ryan and Travis Croxton, owners of Rappahannock River Oysters. These varieties showcase the multitude of flavors that can be found in local oysters. 

The Croxtons received the 2005 Food & Wine Magazine “Tastemaker’s Award,” given to young talents who’ve changed the world of food and wine by age 35. Their oysters are served in 4-star restaurants from New York City to Honolulu.

The cost of $50 includes the oysters, beer, wine, chowder and condiments, and nonalcoholic beverages. Tickets may be purchased by calling 804-758-0712.

Just as Rappahannock River Oysters seeks to preserve one of American’s great waterways, so Jacob’s Ladder is instrumental in helping young people develop their minds and become self-actualized individuals. 

Jacob’s Ladder, a pro-active program for at-risk, exceptionally gifted learners, celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2011, and has more than 200 graduates. Of those students from across the state of Virginia and eastern North Carolina who complete the program, 94% go to college. Many students from the Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck are in the program.

Students enter Jacob’s Ladder after 4th or 5th grade and their experiences include four or five summers of a month-long residential “camp,” as well as opportunities during the remainder of the year to attend enrichment activities and weekend retreats. Advisors continue to support students through high school, often assisting with college selections, applications, and the acquisition of financial aid.
