Growing by leaps and bounds from a start of about 20 vendors, the Deltaville Farmers’ Market, already the Peninsula’s premier market, is quickly moving to becoming its largest and most varied.
Over 60 vendors were signed up as of Tuesday and more may be onboard for the market this Saturday, July 24.
The market is held every fourth Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the trees of the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park. Plenty of parking will be available.
Two Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen contestants, Hayley Guess and Jamie Vaughan, will be on hand with their community projects, and Indian re-enactor David Sweets will be relating Native American history and methods in authentic costume. The museum and all outside exhibits and nature trails will be open.
Stroll under the trees, pick up your homegrown beef from Pampatike Farms, grab your fresh veggies from Garner’s Produce, visit Bobby Wilson for his handmade goat cheese and you’ve only just begun. Visitors can get a massage from Maryanna Fisher, lovingly crafted jewelry from Bev Hardin, and a start-your-own oyster farm with a couple of Captain Tom’s (Noffsinger) oyster floats.
Handmade jewelry, art, photographs, custom T-shirts, locally-made bath soaps, made-to-order Adirondack love seats, pottery, antiques, and the museum’s own nautical flea market are all on the list of offerings.
For the animal lovers out there, the miniature horses from the Wonder Horse Farm will be back as adorable as ever, and the alpacas from Magnolia Hill Farm also will be on hand.
Billz Bistro will be open at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast and will slide into lunch as the eggs run out. Billz own version of beanie-weenies will be added to the menu along with hot dogs, hamburgers, grilled onions, chips, cole slaw, his very popular Eastern Carolina barbecue and the cult classic Bistro Blastburger. The Blastburger has now gone national as the luncheon fave at a restaurant in Pittsburgh.
There will be plenty of free parking.
Working hand-in-hand with the Fishing Bay Yacht Club OPTI Nationals task force, the entire main parking lot of the museum will be cleared Saturday for market-goers. The Museum, along with Deltaville Boatyard, is one of the host facilities for the 300-plus entry competition, providing space for the registration, outfitting, protest judging, games field, and parking. Over 2,000 competitors and spectators are expected.
For information or to sign up for the market, call the museum at 776-7200.
Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park, a non-profit organization, is at 287 Jackson Creek Road and on Mill Creek. Follow the market and signs and turn right off Route 33 across from the Thrift Mart Shell Station.
Holly Point Nature Park, the Pierwalk, and all outside exhibits, gardens and facilities are open dawn to dusk throughout the year.
