Joe Sherman Nelson, son of Alice and Todd Nelson of Wake, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouting, during an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony last Thursday at the Christ Church Parish House.

Nelson is a member of Troop 341. In the 60 years Middlesex County has had a Boy Scout troop, there have been only 19 Eagle Scouts in the county.

A Scout who attains this rank is called an Eagle Scout or Eagle, and the title is held for life, thus giving rise to the phrase “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”

One of the requirements is to sponsor an “Eagle Project.” Nelson’s project was support of the “Adopt a Chaplain Program” through collection of items to ship to U.S. military personnel in the Middle East.

Boy Scout District Committee chairman Miller Smithers praised Nelson for his efforts to reach the highest goal in Scouting. He told Nelson that his work as an Eagle Scout has just begun as he now has the responsibility to carry the values and goals that come with being an Eagle throughout the rest of his life.

Nelson’s mother, Alice Nelson, Scoutmaster for Troop 341, pinned the Eagle badge on her son’s uniform during the ceremony.

A dinner was served and over 100 people attended.
