Museum to host Family Boatbuilding Week in July

The 12th Annual Family Boatbuilding Week—the Deltaville Maritime Museum’s wonderful hands-on learning experience allowing family groups to turn stacks of wood into their own sleek, versatile, working Wright skiff—begins Monday, July 14, and continues through Saturday July 19.

Eight families will build skiffs during the week and then compete in the “Great Skiff Race” for braggin’ rights on Saturday, July 19, at 10 a.m.

Following the race will be the week-ending fish fry, open to the public, at 11:30 a.m.

Started 11 years ago as one of several similar multi-day camps teaching small wooden boatbuilding around the US, the Deltaville Maritime Museum’s Family Boatbuilding Week (FBW) is the only remaining week-long school still using real wood and traditional methods. Call the museum office for an application to participate in next year’s FBW.

At the end of this year’s Family Boatbuilding Week, over 100 Wright skiffs will have been built at the museum by over 1,000 family members from across the country.
