Museum announces concert schedule

by Bill Powell
Events Director
Maritime Museum

If you are looking for great live concerts in a beautiful waterfront setting, the Deltaville Maritime Museum’s “Groovin’ in the Park” music series is really stepping it up a notch with this year’s schedule of stellar performers.

All Groovin’ concerts are 6 to 8 p.m. on the fourth Saturday of the month, from April through September, coinciding with the Deltaville Farmers’ Market dates.

Beginning on Working Waterman’s Weekend, the museum’s official opening day in April, the Groovin’ series offers an “A” list of groups in all types of popular music. There will be no solo artists this year as Groovin’ features ensembles and groups in blues, boogie, soul, country rock, retro and easy listening. Horn bands also will take the stage for the first time in 2012.

Groovin’ in the Park is Deltaville Maritime Museum’s casual music series featuring top musicians who not only play old favorites in their genre but write, arrange and perform their own original music. Groovin’ performers play on the Waterfront Stage overlooking pristine Mill Creek, the museum’s water access.

Groovin’ is a “bring-your-own lawn chair and picnic” series. In case of rain, the concerts are held under the John’s Events Pavilion. There is plenty of convenient parking.

The 2012 Groovin’ schedule is:
  • April 28— Bluesman Terry Garland and keyboardist Bruce Courson will play nothing but the blues. Popular slide bluesman Terry Garland brings his touring buddy Bruce Courson for an evening of old favorites and gritty originals.
  • May 26— Jumbo Lump Daddy and the Backfin Boys will perform rock, country and originals from their new CD.
  • June 23— Roger Carroll and Chez Roue will present hot saxaphone sounds and Louis Armstrong vocals.
  • July 28— NPR’s B.J. Leiderman and friends. It took a hurricane to keep Leiderman away last year. Back from his National NPR tour, Leiderman will bring his rock-and-roll piano, dry wit and friends for an evening of fun and music.
  • August 25— Julius Ray Pittman and the Revival. If you’ve lived on the Middle Peninsula for a while, you’ve danced and boogied to Ray Pittman. He brings his timeless, horn-driven, funky southern soul music and the “revival” to the park.
  • September 1— Labor Day bonus concert with the Josh Walker Quartet. International jazz guitarist, writer and arranger Josh Walker, with ties to our community, brings jazz and easy listening to the park for a special, bonus Groovin’ concert.
  • September 22— Steve Bassett and Robbin Thompson are back together for an up close and personal performance at the final Groovin’ concert of 2012. They will play brand new songs and all the old favorites.

Tickets for Groovin’ in the Park are now on sale. Individual tickets will be available for $10 at the museum office, Nauti Nell’s in Deltaville, or by mail at the Museum, P.O. Box 466, Deltaville, VA 23043. Tickets will also be available up until 6 p.m. on April 28 in a six-ticket any time package for $50—a $10 savings.

Museum members will receive a mailing in February. All tickets admit one person to any one of the seven concert series. This is a museum fundraiser. All proceeds go to improving event facilities.

Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park is a non-profit organization at 287 Jackson Creek Road and on Mill Creek. Turn right off Route 33 across from the Shell Station to get there.
