Middlesex Mardi Gras is Saturday

by Jack Tarran

Hurrah! Mardi Gras is finally here. In two days on Saturday, February 23, we hope you’ll be participating in the fun and fund-raiser at Bethpage Camp-Resort, just outside Urbanna. The Middlesex Kiwanis and the Middlesex Family YMCA will be opening the doors to the Middlesex Mardi Gras from 5 to 10 p.m. for an evening of good food, good music and dancing and good feelings, owing to the fact that your participation will help provide additional, sorely-needed resources for the children of Middlesex County. If you haven’t yet purchased a table or ticket, don’t wait. Call the YMCA at 804-316-9191 to see if any remain.

The event will feature a delicious array of creole favorites at separate serving stations. Hors d’oeuvres will be served from a savory creole popcorn station featuring shrimp, andouille sausage and pepper skewers with scallion aioli; dinner will include serving stations with mini garden salads and sautéed Cajun ratatouille; a carving station will dish up a choice of crispy Cajun boneless chicken thighs, grilled andouille sausage and creole braised tender beef; a dessert station will serve individual king cakes, frozen strawberry slushie flutes and beignets; one serving station will provide non-alcoholic beverages; and another, a three-sided beverage station with adult libations.

The decor will be traditional, featuring what you’d find in New Orleans: masks, beads, trinkets and costumes. Wear ’em if you’ve got ’em.

Mardi Gras is not an evening for restrained elegance. As emcee and auctioneer, respectively, our famous local author, Brad Parks, and acclaimed local actor, Mark Favazza (also the director of the Northern Neck Family YMCA), will keep the evening lively and entertaining. The very talented band “En’Novation” will delight with dance favorites.
