Middlesex Mardi Gras is just around the corner

by Jack Tarran

Mardi Gras arrived in the New World as a French-Catholic tradition in the late 17th Century when the French settled around what is now New Orleans. Since then it has evolved into a carnival celebrated by thousands every year and is embraced well beyond its French-Catholic heritage. Initially, secret societies were formed for the celebration, but now they are better known as “Krewes.” The time has arrived to gather your Krewe and call the YMCA at 804-316-9191 to reserve your table.

The Mardi Gras will be from 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, at Bethpage Camp-Resort near Urbanna.
