Middlesex Census Committee begins work
The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors has established a Census Committee to help county residents understand and participate in this year’s census.
Gloria Johnson of the school board office, Purnell Wood of the NAACP, and Mike Cook of Philippi Christian Church comprise the committee, which will be working to distribute resources and information in the coming weeks.
The committee met with Nikita Collins from the Census Bureau last week to begin coordinating efforts.
Collins helped to verify that census forms will only be delivered to those who have mailboxes at their “911” address. Forms will not be delivered to post office boxes, but are available at three locations in Middlesex County:
- The Cryer Center (758-8852), located at 7485 General Puller Highway near the intersection of Routes 3 and 33 near Topping. The center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, but the Census Bureau representative is there only from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Forms can be picked up any time the center is open.
- The Middlesex Active Lifestyle Center (otherwise known as the Senior Center) at 2788 General Puller Highway (the building is called the Puller Vocational Center) at Cooks Corner (758-4495). A Census Bureau representative is on site Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, but the forms can be picked up in the lobby whenever the center is open (Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
- A Census Bureau representative also will be at the Pilot House Inn on Route 3 in Topping (758-2262) from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Forms will not be available there at other times, however.
The committee would also like to correct some misinformation that may be circulating—census representatives will begin visiting homes to gather census data in May, not in April.
