‘Meet the Artists’ gala begins Friday

Art lovers, wine tasters, and those feeling lucky can kick off a great weekend this Friday, August 17, in Urbanna at the “Meet the Artists” opening reception from 4 to 8 p.m. at 51 Cross Street (Taylor Building). The event is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

Wine, hors d’oeuvres and music by Clayton Neal of “Jumbo Lump Daddy” will all be part of the evening fare that includes fine art on display throughout the building with artists available to meet visitors and patrons.

The exhibit will continue on Saturday, August 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s featured exhibitors are Jack Banks, watercolor; Angela Bounds, oil; Wade Brooks, mixed media; Elise Ritter-Clough, water media; Dave Dunville, acrylic; Ana Fletcher, oil; Ron Courtney, acrylic; Jeff Helm, mixed media; John LaTelle, metal sculpture; Candie Newman, watercolor; Ben Richardson, mixed media; H. Trainor Roden, photography; LaJean Browning-Smith, photography; Carol Hammer, photography; and Sara Soderlund, water media.

Special to this year’s “Meet the Artists” is a community-wide fund-raising effort to help support the Deltaville Maritime Museum as it begins the long process of rebuilding after the recent catastrophic fire that destroyed the museum building and pavilion. An exciting group of raffle items—including an all-inclusive “Sneak Away” weekend for two valued at over $800, and a framed limited-edition Roden photograph of the museum’s Captain John Smith replica shallop “Explorer”—have been donated by businesses and individuals in the community with proceeds going to the museum. Items will be described and on display Friday evening and until noon Saturday, August 18, at which time winners will be drawn and announced. Tickets may be purchased throughout the event and up until the drawing for $5 each or five for $20. Winners need not be in attendance.

The valuable financial support of many organizations and individuals have contributed to this year’s “Meet the Artists” event, including Lawrence Fuccella, Urbanna Inn, Urbanna Therapeutic Massage, Peaches & Cream, Chesapeake Inn, Friday’s Marine, Jacquie Culligan, the Art on the Half Shell Fine Art Festival, Bristow’s Store, Marshall’s Drug Store, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bishop, Alana Courtney, The Shops at 51 Cross Street, Cyndy’s Bynn, and the Haley, Mansfield, Koptish, Glaze Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Financial Group.

“Join the festivities at the opening reception on Friday and don’t forget to come back on Saturday to enjoy the exhibit, buy some fine art, have the coffee of your choice, and shop a little more,” said an event spokesperson. “Bring friends and family to meet the artists, contribute as generously as you can to the museum, and have a great time in Urbanna.”
