Mathews Market Days presents art awards

Ben Richardson shows the carved turtle that highlighted his Best in Show winning display.
Wading through grounds made soggy by Thursday’s rains, art judge Durant Ball deliberated at length on Friday morning before selecting winners of the Mathews Art Group’s participation in the 34th Annual Market Days.

The Best in Show Award of $200 was given to Ben Richardson, the Mathews artist/wood carver whose display featured a lifelike turtle swimming above a rustic mounting.

Richardson also created the carved blue heron that was offered as the prize for MAG’s annual scholarship raffle. Mathews resident Paul Paquet’s winning raffle ticket was drawn by young Market Days participant Anne Porter Hudgins of Virginia Beach.

Hugh Townsend Harris’ painting of vividly-colored cork floats won the show’s $100 Blue Ribbon. A painting of an egret head earned the $50 Red Ribbon for Bob Haynes.

Ten honorable mention ribbons were awarded with Ball saying that the high quality of artistry at the event made him wish he had even more ribbons to give. The show’s white ribbons went to Jane Partin, Linda Walker, Gary Edmonson, Nancy Sweet, Marilyn Cotter, Dick DePaul, Jim Kuraovics, Kathleen Noffsinger, Elizabeth Johannessen and Jerry Spangler.

The Artists’ Choice, a $50 award given to the artist chosen by the other artists at the event, went to Fran Martin Dixon.
