Jim Merrill

At 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, at the Sundays at Two program in the Lancaster Community Library in Kilmarnock, Jim Merrill will present a program titled “Meet the Maker—Guitar Maker, that is!” Merrill is a master luthier and a recognized Martin Guitar historian.

Merrill began playing bass guitar with his brother as a teenager. When the band had trouble with their instruments, they turned to him for repairs. He became intrigued by the construction of guitars and has been making them since 1981. He credits original design makers and their attention to detail, materials, and hand-craftsmanship as being the basis of every great guitar.

He notes that each guitar is built and created with its own individual essence. “It’s not a ‘by-the-numbers’ process, but rather an innate ability to tap into the heart and soul of every guitar that is built. This is creating, not reproducing!” he said.

Merrill’s guitars have been sold to Hollywood actor and musician Billy Bob Thornton; Jack Lawrence, who plays with bluegrass legend Doc Watson; and Marty Stewart and Earl Scruggs.

He will share how he combines his knowledge and skills with his passion and drive to create the same quality guitar as the most sought after vintage pre-war guitars.

Coffee and cookies will be served following the free presentation.
