Master Gardeners announce winter programs

Mark your calendar! The Middlesex Master Gardeners will sponsor two programs to help us through the winter months and prepare for the coming gardening season. All programs will be held in the Cooks Corner Office Complex, 2911 General Puller Highway (Route 33), three miles east of Saluda. The public is invited to attend these free programs and encouraged to bring gardening questions.

The program “Spade to Soup: Vegetable Gardening 101” will be on Saturday, February 18, at 9:30 a.m.

Dr. Wayne Moyer has been an active James City County Master Gardener since 1996. His interest in gardening started with a Victory Garden at the age of 13. This program is not only about the basics, but has information that will prepare all gardeners through the many situations that you will see in the vegetable garden. Whether you are a new or seasoned gardener, you will walk away with something that guides you from “Spade to Soup.”

“Americana’s Treasure: Our Native Azaleas” will be held Tuesday, March 20, at 6:30 p.m.

Don Hyatt is recognized as a national authority on azaleas and rhododendrons and has served on the national boards of both the Azalea Society of America and American Rhododendron Society. He owns the Stonehouse Creek Nursery in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Amherst County. This program will describe the 17 species of azaleas native to North America, as well as their scenic habitats. In addition, Hyatt will discuss wildflowers and companion plants that bloom at the same time.

Master Gardener/Virginia Cooperative Extension programs are open to all. If you are a person with a disability or require assistive services in order to attend, or require additional information about these programs, please call the Middlesex County Extension Office at (804) 758-4120.

Master Gardeners are horticultural educators administered by local Virginia Cooperative Extension agents. Virginia Cooperative Extension is an agency of Virginia Tech and Virginia State University.
