Maritime Museum offers cruises aboard ‘Lillian B.’

The “Lillian B.” can take 6 passengers on her Deltaville Maritime Museum Discovery Cruise.

Expanding their offerings to the public to experience both the past and “living” maritime history of the Chesapeake Bay, the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park announced this week it will offer a series of free cruises to preview the beginning of their “Deltaville Maritime Museum Discovery Cruises.”

The cruises are planned to offer both the experience of a ride on an authentic Chesapeake Bay workboat and tours of the various historic water trails and landmarks along Mill Creek, Jackson Creek, Fishing Bay  and the Piankatank River.

The free preview cruises will run on Saturdays, Sept. 4 and 11, at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Cruises will be around 90 minutes. Bottled water and soft drinks will be available.

“Captain Pete Cardozo approached us with the idea,” said Chuck McGhinnis, museum boatshop director. The boatshop was just finishing the restoration of our 37-foot classic workboat Lillian B. It was the right idea with the right boat coming together at the right time! We began our shakedown last weekend at the farmers’ market.

“We’re offering the free cruises to basically find out if people are interested, and get their feedback, so we can make the cruises fun and interesting for the most folks,” continued McGhinnis. “If the interest and feedback are positive, we will work out a regular cruise schedule. Watch the Sentinel and our website for details.”

To reserve a space for yourself or your group, call the museum office at 776-7200.

“We will be able to take up to six passengers in comfort. Lillian is roomy. Our plan is to follow the John Smith Trail and other points of interest, but if a group has a special interest we have the flexibility to conform the tour to what they would like,” McGhinnis added. “The relatively shallow draft of Lillian allows us to get in close to most shorelines for those interested in wildlife.”

Deltaville Maritime Museum and Holly Point Nature Park is a non-profit organization at 287 Jackson Creek Road and on Mill Creek. Turn right off Route 33 across from the Shell Station to get there.

Holly Point Nature Park, the Pierwalk and all other outside exhibits, gardens and facilities are open dawn to dusk throughout the year, except during pre-announced private events.

To find out more, visit the Deltaville Maritime Museum website. The museum can be contacted at or 776-7200.
