Local teacher plans creative writing workshop
Dr. Susan Schmidt will hold a creative writing workshop in Urbanna for local writers beginning Monday, Jan. 19. Dr. Susan Schmidt currently teaches English and sailing at Christchurch School.
Participants may also join the workshop on Monday, Jan. 26.
In a fun and supportive community atmosphere, workshop members will share their writing and critique each other’s work. The workshop will offer writing exercises in poetry, short fiction, and nonfiction. Writers of all levels of experience, 17 years or older, are welcome.
Dr. Schmidt has taught creative and technical writing in college and high school for 30 years. Johns Hopkins University Press recently published her narrative nonfiction book, “Landfall Along the Chesapeake, in the Wake of Captain John Smith” (http://www.susanschmidt.net).
She is a published poet and nature essayist. In 2008 she had a poetry-writing fellowship in southwest France; she has been a resident writer at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, and Bread Loaf. She has a doctorate in American literature. She has taught English and environmental studies at Duke University, N.C. State, University of Virginia, Hampton University, Brevard College, and N.C. School of Science and Math.
The creative writing workshop will meet on Mondays from 4 to 6 p.m., starting Jan. 19, for six or eight weeks, depending on the group’s interest. The workshop will held in town council chambers above the Urbanna Town Hall on 45 Cross Street.
