On Wednesday, July 1, the Friends of the Rappahannock Community College Library Center will sponsor a free concert of jazz and classic American songs by vocalist and keyboard player Jennifer Kirkland and guitarist Bert Carlson.
The concert will celebrate the RCC Friends’ 35 years of support for the Library Center, and in particular the contributions of two long-time members—Sally King and Jane Kemper—whose untiring efforts both as active participants and as officers have played a major role in making the Library Center an excellent resource for the college, the community, and the region.
Kirkland’s voice has been described as a blend of the best sounds of Julie London, Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney and Norah Jones. A graduate of the Indiana University School of Music, she has been performing professionally since the late 1970s, as well as teaching both privately and on the music faculties of Mary Baldwin College and Southern Virginia University. She and Bert Carlson perform together frequently, and have been named by the Virginia Commission for the Arts as “elite touring artists.”
The concert will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. in the lecture hall on RCC’s Warsaw Campus, with refreshments to follow. The public is welcome to attend, but as space is limited, interested persons should call 804-333-6712 or 804-333-6713 to reserve seats.
