‘Jackass Flats’ concert set for Saturday in Tappahannock

Jackass Flats

“Jackass Flats” along with opening act “The Flat Swamp String Band” will perform Saturday, July 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Tappahannock Concert Series at Cooke Field.

The Tappahannock Concert Series, sponsored by Tappahannock Main Street Program, offers six concerts in 2012, featuring river country performers and the best musicians from around Virginia. The performances are festival style with beer and wine, barbecue and hot dogs, in a family-friendly atmosphere.

Jackass Flats got its name in an unusual way. On old U.S. Route 60, stretching from Williamsburg to Richmond, one comes upon a simple crossroads with a well-worn country store and dilapidated sign, marking the pre-interstate roadside stop Jackass Flats. An irresistible name for an irresistible band . . . these boys play bluegrass with an energy that is infectious and memorable.

Nearly a decade ago, Jackass Flats began their journey as a bluegrass band chasing the scene up and down the East Coast at country festivals in the middle of nowhere, bars, dives, late nights, and life in a van. These things will leave you with stories to tell, and that’s exactly what Jackass Flats did—release two acclaimed albums of original song writing: “Purgatory Mountain” and “Greetings From Jackass Flats.” The band soon found itself playing the region’s premiere stages and festivals.

The concert field is located next to River Fitness on Hobbs Hole Drive in Tappahannock. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 and available at EVB downtown, First Union Bank next to McDonald’s, Java Jacks, and online at, and are $15 at the gate.
