Humane Society auction is Saturday in Gloucester

The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society (GMHS) and the Gloucester-Mathews-Middlesex Animal Shelter are pleased to announce Chesapeake Bank’s generous commitment as the 2012 Annual Auction Event Sponsor. This year’s annual auction event will kick off the GMHS’s 100th year anniversary celebration.

The annual auction is the shelter’s largest annual fundraiser with more than 350 in attendance each year. This year’s event will be held Saturday, January 28, at 6 p.m. in the Abingdon Ruritan Center at Bena in Gloucester County.

Additional sponsors of this year’s auction event for the animals include Naked Mountain Winery, Middle Peninsula Resources, Clay and Madeline Mayhood in support of Helen’s Gift (a fund created in memory of Madeline’s mother for animals in crisis due to owner aging, illness or death), Dean and Cam Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Richter, Mr. and Mrs. P.B. White, and Sentara Healthcare.

Program ads have been purchased in support of the event by Neena Rodgers at Isabell K. Horsley Real Estate Ltd., Orvis Corporation, Legacy Financial Services, and Wynne Ford and Wynne Volvo of Hampton.

“Many thanks are due all our generous sponsors as their donations help defer the cost of the event allowing more funds to go directly to the animals and day-to-day operation of the shelter,” said Ellen Thacker, executive director of the GMHS. “We particularly thank Chesapeake Bank for being our event sponsor for the second consecutive year. Chesapeake Bank is a great friend to the shelter animals and so very generous to the communities they serve; we are grateful to have them onboard again this year.”

Sponsorships are still available at levels from $1,000 to $3,000 and come with a variety of perks such as premium reserve seating tables, a personal server for the evening, a pre-auction item preview hour, program ads, sponsor banners and special recognition. Please contact Joyce Richter at 804-694-7835 or for more information.

Auction items are coming in daily and include a handmade wooden canoe and paddles, original artwork by Nancy Thomas and other fantastic artists, prints by John Barber, weeks at vacation homes, antique furniture, great jewelry, and much more.

Also, this year guests will have the chance to bid on their pet being featured as the cover animal for the 2013 GMHS calendar and/or the showcase pet for a specific month. Local and regional artists are also once again donating their time and amazing talents to create original one-of-a-kind theme-based centerpieces to be auctioned.

General admission reservations are available for $45 and reserved seating tables for eight are available for $450 (seating is only guaranteed for reserve table reservations). Please make checks payable to “GMHS” and mail to GMHS Auction, P.O. Box 2, Bena, VA 23018, or contact Shannon Fedors at 804-642-4320 or by email at for more information.

The Gloucester-Mathews-Middlesex Animal Shelter is open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.  The shelter is closed on Sundays.
