Healthy living and heart awareness rally Saturday

UPDATED: 08/01/14 @ 10:51 a.m.

Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen contestant Angel Abbott and her Little Miss Spat contestant Katelin Reiner are sponsoring the “Rock the Beat” health rally from 9 a.m.-noon this Saturday, August 2, near Urbanna.

“It Takes Heart to be a Hero” is the theme as the American Heart Association promotes its Jump Rope for Heart events this year. The hero of Urbanna Oyster Festival Queen contestant Angel Abbott is her dad.

Angel lost her dad, former Middlesex Sheriff Guy Abbott, to a heart attack last August. He had a strong heart for his family, his faith and his community. Guy had fought heart disease and diabetes for many years, but Angel never thought it would take him from her family so suddenly. It is important to Angel to bring heart disease awareness to not only adults, but also to the children of her community. She feels it is important that children understand that the choices they make now will affect their lives as adults. Also, as adults, it is not too late to live healthier.

The final phase of Angel’s project entails “Rock the Beat,” a healthy living and heart awareness rally featuring music from various local artists, games, face painting and educational seminars.

Due to the rain Angel Abbott’s “Rock the Beat Rally” supporting the American Heart Association will be moved to the Urbanna Fire Department.  The Rally will have music from local artists, educational booths, games, face painting, snow cones and more.  The Farm Bureau AG day will also move to this location with the Rally.  The event will be held from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.  Please join us for some family fun at these community events.

Angel and her Little Miss Spat contestant, Katelin Reiner, hope to touch the hearts of the community and raise awareness. Please help raise money for the American Heart Association. You may donate today online at, or by mailing Angel a check made payable to “The American Heart Association” to Angel Abbott, 239 N. Oakes Circle, Saluda, VA 23149.
