Gloucester Fair opens

The Gloucester County Fair will be held August 12-16 at Ark Park, 2 miles north of Gloucester Court House on Route 17.

A carnival will open at 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, at noon on Saturday, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Premium exhibits may be entered on Thursday from 3:30 to 8 p.m. Flowers and baked goods may be entered from 8 to 9 a.m. on Friday. Three baking contests are being held: The Best Angel Food Cake Dessert Contest, sponsored by the Virginia Egg Council with the winners entered in the State Fair competition; Gloucester’s Best Pound Cake Recipe; and a 4-H Cookie-Brownie Bar Contest for youth 9-18, sponsored by the Gloucester Fair Association. All cakes entered in the pound cake and angel food dessert contests will be offered for sale to the highest bidder at auction at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at the main stage.

Entertainment featured will include the bluegrass band “East Street” on Friday at 8 p.m.

The clogging group, “The Kountry Kickers,” will perform at 4 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the country band, “Fay Holloway Jr. and Southern Tradition.” “R.B. and the Rockers,” a country rock band will take the stage at 8 p.m.

The 4-H Club will present a miniature horse show on Sunday at 2 p.m., as well as a petting zoo and antique farm equipment exhibit, which will be open throughout the fair. Showtime Karaoke will be held at 7 p.m. followed by a talent show at 8:30 p.m.

Door prize drawings are held each night, Friday through Sunday at 10 p.m. Bingo will be held Thursday through Sunday at 7 p.m.

Many other activities such as games, craft and commercial sales, food and entertainment will be featured throughout the fair.

Admission is $1 for children ages 6 to 12, and $2 for adults. Free shuttle service is available from the parking lots.
