Beginning April 2, a First Responder Class will be offered in Urbanna at the Central Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad building. The lead instructor, Ellen Vest of Deltaville, will offer the classes on some Mondays and Thursdays until June 4, with a mandatory Saturday class on June 6.
Class hours during the week will be 7 to 10 p.m. with the final class on Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Class dates are April 2, April 6, April 9, April 13, April 16, April 20, April 23, April 27, May 4, May 11, May 21, May 28, June 4 and June 6.

Prerequisites include being a minimum age of 16 at the onset of class, and being a CPR for the healthcare provider. A CPR class for those needing it will be offered on March 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please indicate a need for a CPR class when registering.
Students are required to purchase the textbook (to be announced). There is also a registration fee of $35. That fee is waved for anyone wishing to take the class who is already a member of any Middlesex fire department, EMS, sheriff’s department, or Urbanna police department. Proof of membership is required.
The First Responder program is the first in the series of Virginia certifications that leads to being a Paramedic. It is a 40-hour (minimum) class that prepares one to respond to medical emergencies and injuries in a knowledgeable and capable way, and stabilizing a patient until the ambulance arrives.
If there is interest, a bridge program taking First Responders to EMT-Basic will be offered in the fall.
