Most of Middlesex will celebrate Independence Day on Saturday, July 2. The day begins with the Deltaville 5K and Kids Fun Run at 8 a.m. The Deltaville Deltas will host the Richmond Braves at 7:30 p.m. at Deltaville Ballpark. At the Urbanna Town Marina, “Sweet Justice” performs from 6-9 p.m. and the annual boat parade is at 7:30 p.m. Fireworks go off at dark. (Photo by Tom Chillemi)

Music, boat parade, fireworks featured in Urbanna
The public is invited to the Urbanna Independence Day Celebration on Saturday, July 2, at the Urbanna Town Marina on Urbanna Creek. Featured will be a boat parade, live music, food, and fireworks. The rain date is July 3.

After enjoying a free day at the town pool, visitors are invited to the activities at the town marina, which begin at 6 p.m.

Live music will be played by “Sweet Justice” starting a 6 p.m. Hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue, drinks, funnel cakes and sno-cones will be provided by the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department.

The annual boat parade begins with participants gathering at the Urbanna bridge at 7:15 p.m. They will then parade past the town marina and the judges stand at 7:30 p.m. Judges will award prizes for the most patriotic, most creative and most inspirational boats along with an honorable mention. Applications for the boat parade are available at the town office and the town marina, and at the bottom of this page. For more information, call the town marina at 758-5440 or the town office at 758-2613.

A fireworks display starting at dusk over Urbanna Creek will conclude the activities.

There are no children’s activities this year.

To ensure safe access to emergency vehicles, Virginia Street will be closed from Cross Street down to the town marina, including Oyster Road, from 6 p.m. until after the fireworks.

Enjoy an old-fashioned Independence Day celebration, but please leave your pets at home because fireworks can traumatize animals.

Deltaville 5K & Kids Fun Run is Saturday
For its sixth year, serving as host and fitness ambassador to over 34 states as far away as California, Washington and Hawaii, the Deltaville 5K & Kids Fun Run is preparing for another exciting event this Saturday, July 2, for participants near and far. This year’s theme is “Surf Deltaville.” Register online now at DVLRace.com through Thursday, June 30, before the registration fee increases by $5.

Walk-up registration and packet pickup is Friday, July 1, from 4-7 p.m., and on race day, Saturday, July 2, from 6:30-7:45 a.m. at the Deltaville 5K race tent across Route 33 from the Deltaville Community Center.

Race day begins with crab races starting at 7:45 a.m., Kids Fun Run at 8 a.m., and 5K at 8:30 a.m. As in years past, the course will follow Route 33 and Lover’s Lane and will be completed around 9:30 a.m.

For a second year, proceeds from the race will go toward the continued campaign to refurbish Deltaville Ballpark.
