Polar Plunge into Urbanna Creek and Chili Cook-off

The 2014 Polar Plunge

Signup under way for Feb. 14 event

The 2nd annual Chili Plunge is set to take place Saturday, February 14, in the Town of Urbanna. On that day Urbanna will be abuzz with activities from the waterfront into the center of town.

All ages are welcome to test their body’s tolerance against the cold water of Urbanna Creek with the Polar Plunge taking place at 9:30 a.m. Plungers and onlookers can gather in the heated tent at the Urbanna Town Marina at Upton Point where coffee and hot chocolate will be provided by Cross Street Coffee.

The Polar Plunge is $25 for those who register before January 31, and $30 after February 1. Members of the Middlesex Family YMCA receive a $5 discount. Polar Plunge participants will receive a free Chili Plunge t-shirt and a hot lunch from Something Different restaurant. Proceeds from the Polar Plunge will benefit the Guardian Program at the Middlesex Family YMCA.

Volunteers are welcome and can call 776-8846 for more information on how to help or how to register.

While the Polar Plunge is taking place, chili cookers will be getting their warm creations ready for testing. Chili cookers can arrive and set up as early as 6 a.m. and need to have their chili ready by 10 a.m. The chili competition will take place in the parking lot next to Something Different restaurant on Virginia Street in the center of Urbanna. There is a 5-gallon minimum for the chili competition but cookers should know that the more chili being prepared, the more opportunities they will have for taste testing.

This year’s chili cook-off honors the late Dan Gill, who had a passion for cooking and loved a friendly cook-off of any type. A band will play as folks enjoy the day’s activities. For more information and to enter the chili cook-off, contact Sarah Kimble at 804-695-6101. Visit for complete contest rules and for more detailed information.
