Fire trucks, an emergency helicopter and other equipment will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday at the Hartfield Firehouse.
The Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department (HVFD) will host a “Firefighters for Education” event on Saturday, August 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The goal of this event is to educate the community on fire prevention and safety and, at the same time, get students excited about education and going back to school.

There will be activities for students from all grades and all schools. Middlesex Elementary School students can participate in a coloring contest and a drawing contest based on the theme “Stay Low and Go!”

St. Clare Walker Middle School students can participate in a poster contest using the theme “Stop, Drop, and Roll.”

Winners and prizes will be chosen following the event, and winners will be contacted to claim their prize, so students should start thinking now for some winning ideas.

High school students are encouraged to attend to learn more about HVFD and how to become a Junior Volunteer Firefighter or Ladies Auxiliary member, as there will be a recruiting table and members available to answer questions.

Students and parents will get to see firsthand the equipment on the fire trucks and learn how it is used during an emergency. Firefighters will discuss fire safety methods that students can use at home or at school.

“We want to get our students excited about a great year at school full of learning and fun,” said a HVFD spokesperson.

Some other fund-raising activities also will be there, including a drive for one of HVFD’s main goals—back-to-school supplies. Students and their parents can bring donations of new school supplies for HVFD to distribute to Middlesex County students who are in need of these items to help get them off to a great start this school year.

In addition to educational activities for each school level and fire equipment demonstrations, a LifeEvac helicopter will arrive on the scene at 11 a.m. for demonstrations. The LifeEvac crew will show the equipment they carry and answer any questions that students and parents may have. LifeEvac will depart at noon.

Other activities planned for Firefighters for Education include: HVFD Ladies Auxiliary lunch and bake sales, golf cart raffle tickets, opportunities for students to try on firefighter gear, fire prevention materials for students and parents to take home, and many more exciting activities.

This event is free so attendees are encouraged to bring a donation of school supplies instead.

Firefighters for Education is sponsored by Gloucester Walmart, Hillside Cinemas, Airheads of Gloucester, and Doc Jones Used Auto Parts. The rain date for Firefighters for Education is Sunday, August 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information or to volunteer, visit http://www.hartfieldfire.com or call Susan at 776-0705.
