Christmas Friends donations at all-time high

The community has set a new record by donating $31,914.82 to Christmas Friends Inc.

“Our community is extremely generous,” said Christmas Friends Inc. president Fred Gaskins. “This will give us the best cushion heading into next year that we have ever had.”

More donations means more money to help the needy, said Gaskins. “We will have the flexibility to increase the allotment per child or adult, and to add to the number of people served—or both.”

The fund-raising goal this year was $25,000 and Christmas Friends’ spent $24,230, Gaskins noted.

The previous high mark for donations was $27,947.36 in 2006.

Gaskins also encourages recycling gift boxes. Anyone with leftover boxes after Christmas may leave them in the covered area at the Sentinel back door. Someone will check that area daily and move them inside for use in 2009.

Christmas Friends is winding up its 23rd year and it helped more than 285 low-income, disabled and elderly residents of Middlesex County. Hundreds of gifts were delivered last Saturday by volunteers.

Tax-deductible donations should be made payable to Christmas Friends Inc., c/o Southside Sentinel, P.O. Box 549, Urbanna, VA 23175. Call 758-2328 for more information or visit http://www.SSentinel.com.

Contributors will be recognized as Christmas Friends and their donations will be listed in the Southside Sentinel. Contributors who wish to remain anonymous should request that their donations be listed as such. Memorial contributions will also be acknowledged.
