Christmas Friends delivers gifts to 301 county residents

Joanne Ruffa of Tappahannock, representing Jacob’s Ladder, and Darrell Sears of Urbanna were two of 24 gift deliverers on Saturday.

Christmas Friends Inc. volunteers delivered hundreds of gifts to the needy of Middlesex County on Saturday, December 15.

This year Christmas Friends extends a special appreciation to the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department in Urbanna for letting them use the new, large bays at the firehouse to sort gift bags. Over the years it has been increasingly difficult to find a dry place to sort over 300 bags into a dozen or more delivery areas in the county, and the firehouse space was ideal. “Our volunteer firemen assist our community in so many ways and we are thankful that they agreed to share the beautiful new facility in Urbanna with Christmas Friends,” said Christmas Friends president Fred Gaskins.

Because of the abundant space, the Sentinel staff was able to fully sort the bags not just by delivery area but by delivery order. This meant the vans were quickly loaded and out the door to 12 sections of the county from Jamaica to Deltaville, Gaskins added.

Christmas Friends Inc. still needs money, said Gaskins. “The funds need to be replaced so Christmas Friends shoppers can get their usual early start next year.”

Make donations payable to: Christmas Friends Inc., and mail to c/o Southside Sentinel, P.O. Box 549, Urbanna, VA 23175.

This week $4,888.32 was donated, bringing this year’s total donations to $20,373.32. This year, $28,800 was spent on gifts.

Christmas Friends Inc. is in its 27th year helping the less fortunate of Middlesex County. Monetary donations are needed for the program that will served 301 clients this year—211 children and 90 adults.

Since its creation in 1986, a key ingredient to the success of Christmas Friends has been its partnership with the Middlesex County Department of Social Services, which screens all applicants for eligibility.

Christmas Friends is a 501(c)(3) organization and all funds go to help the needy. There are no administrative fees and all workers are volunteers. Tax-deductible donations may be made payable to Christmas Friends Inc., c/o Southside Sentinel, P.O. Box 549, Urbanna, VA 23175.

Contributors will be recognized as Christmas Friends and their donations will be listed in the Sentinel. Contributors who wish to remain anonymous should request that their donations be listed as such. Memorial contributions will also be acknowledged.
